The Austin City Council approved a master plan Thursday for Barton Springs Pool, which includes new restrooms on the east side of the pool, renovating the current bath house, burying power lines and adding stairways and native plants to the area downstream of the pool.
The council agreed in 2007 to spend $6.2 million on short-term projects in the plan, such as water-quality studies and replacing the bathhouse roof. Many of those projects are under way.
However, according to the Statesman, money has not yet been identified for the long-term projects, which are estimated to cost $14 million to $24 million. Most people are not in favor of raising taxes. The city would have to hold a bond election, or private groups would have to raise money.
What do you think? Does Barton Springs need a makeover?
