Round Rock city leaders held a series of public meetings in the last two weeks to propose a redevelopment plan for the city’s town center area.
Right now, getting to downtown Round Rock from I-35 requires a drive down RM 620/Round Rock Avenue, just north of Main Street. Under the new plan, the city would extend Main Street — home to Round Rock’s 2-block historic district — to the I-35 access road. The area would also include a hotel, theater, and shops to greet drivers approaching downtown.
The redevelopment project is still in its early planning stages, so a budget has not yet been created. It would offer more than 700 new residential units, including 400 rentals. Additionally, up to 91,000 square feet of office space and 145,000 square feet of shops could be added to the downtown area.
Consulting company Torti Gallas will present city staff with a vision and implementation schedule for the plan over the coming months, and once approved, city representatives say the plan could take up to 15 years to fulfill.
